Bid to impeach Brian Curtin
18/05/2004 - 17:20:23

The Government is to begin impeachment proceedings against the judge at the centre of a child pornography scandal, it was confirmed today.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said the cabinet had decided to establish a joint parliamentary committee to investigate the case of Circuit Court Judge Brian Curtin.

The Cork-based judge was acquitted of possessing child pornography last month.

The case against him collapsed because a warrant used to search his Tralee home was out of date.

Mr Ahern said the committee would comprise of members of both the Seanad and the Dáil and would meet in private.

He said all reports from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Garda Commissioner and any other relevant papers would be made available to the committee.

In a letter to the Government, Judge Curtin has indicated he will respond to the investigation ?appropriately?, Mr Ahern added.
