courts - England & Wales - child porn judge retires
A senior Crown Court judge who was arrested over child pornography
allegations is to retire early on grounds of ill health on
Wednesday.
David Selwood, who is the resident judge at Portsmouth Crown
Court, was arrested in April as part of a national paedophile
investigation.
He was interviewed by detectives over allegations of possessing
indecent images of children.
He was released on police bail pending further inquiries.
A spokesman for the Department of Constitutional Affairs said
that Judge Selwood would be entitled to a full pension.
The spokesman said that he was due to retire on 27 June when
he reached the age of 70 but was retiring early because of
ill health.
"The judge is innocent until proved guilty and therefore,
like any other person, is entitled to his full pension upon
retirement", the spokesman said.
Military career
Judge Selwood, of Winchester, Hampshire, became a circuit
judge in 1992 after a successful army career.
A spokesperson for Hampshire police said that a man arrested
in Winchester as part of a countrywide paedophile investigation
remained on bail until 7 June.
The judge has a distinguished military career dating back
to 1957 when he was a 2nd lieutenant on National Service,
according to Who's Who.
He joined the Territorial Army while working in private legal
practice in Plymouth after training as a solicitor.
He held military posts in the legal services in Germany and
Cyprus before being appointed Director of Army Legal Services
in the Ministry of Defence in London from 1990 to 1992.
