Recipe for good contact:
. Both parents are committed to contact.
. The contact parent accepts his/her non-residential status and the resident parent proactively facilitates contact and includes the contact parent in decision-making.
. Both support the children in having a relationship with the other parent and do not
denigrate or threaten the other parent.
. Parents adopt a realistic appraisal of each other, recognising strengths and weaknesses.
. Parents recognise that there will be conflict, but learn to manage it.
. Parents consult children about arrangements.
. Parents find time to be alone with children without new partners always present.
Recipe for contact failure:
. Contact poses an ongoing risk of physical or psychological harm to one or more party
involved.
. Not all parties are committed to contact.
. At least one party seeks significant changes to the existing contact arrangements. On balance, contact is not a positive experience for all parties.
